Jacob Soucy x Emmett Hodgins & The Coast Group

Two six-piece bands. One night. Jacob and Emmett yearn to engage the hearts, minds, and booties of Toronto’s cutest patooties. Come bust a move at Burdock Music Hall as you’re serenaded by a concoction of jazz fusion and alt pop on Friday, July 24. A true double bill. Jacob Soucy is a Vancouver-born trumpeter, songwriter, and producer based in Toronto. He released his debut instrumental album, Vision Is Essential, in the summer of 2024. Soucy was surrounded by music from an early age, recording in the studio at age four and later picking up the trumpet and drums at ten. He eventually moved to Toronto to pursue his studies and career in music, obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree from Humber Polytechnic. “Icebreaker,” the lead single from Vision Is Essential, was added to Exclaim!’s “The Eh! List” playlist alongside fellow Canadian artists including Nelly Furtado, BADBADNOTGOOD, Marianas Trench, and daysormay. In addition to working as a freelance trumpeter and music teacher, Soucy continues to perform in Toronto while developing his second album. Emmett Hodgins is a Victoria-born pianist and composer proficient in classical, jazz, R&B, and folk music. In high school he completed his RCM 10 and taught at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Hodgins then moved to Toronto to pursue a Bachelor of Music at Humber Polytechnic, graduating with honours in 2023. Now a staple in the Toronto and Victoria music scenes, Hodgins leads his own projects, namely: The Emmett Hodgins Trio and Emmett Hodgins & The Coast Group. In the last two years, Emmett has released albums with both bands, respectively titled “Bibliosmia” and “Idyllic”. The Coast Group is a Toronto-based contemporary jazz fusion group consisting of members from across Canada. Now in their fourth year as a band, they continue to create new and exciting original music inspired by the west coast. They combine ambient, classical, contemporary jazz, jazz fusion, funk, pop, and free jazz into the sound they represent. The Coast Group has performed at Victoria Jazz Festival and T.U. Jazz Festival, and regularly plays throughout Toronto and the GTA.
