With musical host Michael Occhipinti! Michael Occhipinti is that rare guitarist who is able to assert his personality across multiple genres and styles. Quick, name another guitarist who co-leads and conducts an innovative all-original 16-piece jazz orchestra, is known as a masterful creator of guitar atmospherics for others and his project ES:MO, shows off his improvising jazz chops with names like Don Byron, Jeff Coffin, Sam Rivers, and more, plays first-rate funk, r&b, and Afro-pop rhythm guitar, is celebrated for fusing Sicilian folk music with jazz and chamber music while also being part of groups exploring traditions from Turkey, India, and Africa, writes for classical ensembles, and is a skilled arranger who can put his own stamp on the music of songwriters such as John Lennon, and Bruce Cockburn. Michael Occhipinti is a restless searcher, eager to partner with new musicians and to find new ways to express himself as a composer and guitarist.
ARTISTS:
Emerging singer-songwriters Finbar Wall and Maddy Ringo, Toronto natives with deep roots in Ireland the American Midwest, are kicking off their on their debut cross-country tour with an evening at Hugh’s Room Live. Inspired by the folk tradition, the two weave songs of love, faith, and the modern world, in rootsy harmony inspired by a long tradition of storytelling through song. Going Up That Mountain —their first EP as a duo— is available now on all streaming platforms.
Since picking up a music career through busking on the streets of Toronto, Maddy Ringo has been a fresh voice in the timeless tradition of American folk music. The daughter of a born-and-bred Canadian and an American peacenik, Maddy learned the Rise Up Singing catalogue as a seven-year-old, creating her foundation in the works ofJoan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and the like.
Finbar Wall is an Irish-Canadian singer-songwriter as well as founder and frontman of Hamilton band The Commune. Finbar’s plainspoken lyricism, relevant yet nostalgic compliments the street level rock’n’roll which has built The Commune’s reputation as one of the most promising young live-acts to come out of Hamilton in the last few years. Don’t miss these two great artists together on Friday June 26.
